SINCE1959, the Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) of the San Joaquin County Bar Association has referred pre-screened members of the public who are seeking legal advice and/or representation to LRS member attorneys. LRS staff collect information on the relevant area of law, the client's location, availability of client and attorney, and languages spoken by the client and attorney to make referrals.
The Bar Association LRS staff makes over 1200 referrals a year to privately retained panel attorneys.
The referral categories are updated regularly to ensure that clients' needs are properly fulfilled and to ensure that member attorneys have access to pre-screened clients in their concentrations.

How much does it cost to become an LRS attorney?
LRS membership costs $100.00 per year for San Joaquin County Bar Association members plus payment of a remittal fee. Each attorney donates one-half (1/2) hour of time per referral for which LRS charges the client $60 in most cases (except personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful termination, Social Security, and Workers' compensation cases).
Non-members of the San Joaquin County Bar Association may join LRS for $205 per year, and pay a remittal fee. Each attorney donates one-half (1/2) hour of time per referral for which LRS charges the client $60 in most cases (except personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful termination, Social Security, and Workers' compensation cases).
Remittal fees are the same for all LRS attorneys, paid to LRS at the conclusion of the matter, of 15% of net legal fees collected from referred clients (only 10% for Social Security & Workers' Compensation cases with fee awards over $500; otherwise 0%). This fee supports LRS, provides for the referral software used to make impartial, rotating referrals among panel members and pays for advertising your services.
How do I become a member of LRS?
In order to become a member of LRS, you must apply on the appropriate application, complete the required supporting documents, and be approved by the relevant Peer Review Panel. Once approved, you pay your $100.00 or $205.00 dues, submit your proof of malpractice insurance, and you'll start receiving referrals.
