Dear Justice Partners:

Below is the Chief Justice’s Emergency Order for the Superior Court of California, County of San Joaquin.  The Chief Justice granted the extensions as they appear in the order.

The court was granted limited extensions for arraignments, preliminary hearings, and criminal trials.

The Chief Justice is issuing the same extensions for all courts that request extensions such as ours.  The Chief Justice has made it clear to the Judicial Branch that she expects the courts to continue to provide essential services including but not exclusive of in-custody arraignments, preliminary hearings, and jury trials.

We urge everyone to read the order for details.

In advance, we’d like to thank our justice partners for your cooperation while we work together through this unprecedented time and we reiterate the Chief’s sentiments:  “Although the extent of the pandemic is unknown at this time, California’s courts will continue to do what they do best: balancing public safety and health while protecting liberty and due process.”

Thank you.

Xapuri B. Villapudua

Presiding Judge
