We celebrated another dedicated jurist at the 2021 Law Day Luncheon on September 28, 2021. Surrounded by family, friends, mentors and colleagues, the Honorable Linda L. Lofthus was awarded the 2021 Law Day Award.
Judge Lofthus spoke of the many people in her life who helped her in so many ways. What she didn’t mention was all the people along the way that she guided and mentored. She has an endless amount of patience and enthusiasm when it comes to guiding someone to be the best they can be.
Judge Lofthus was appointed to the bench in 2003. She has served as a member of the Statewide Commission for Impartial Courts, the Continuing Judicial Studies Education Committee, the Criminal Law Curriculum Committee, the Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee, the Bench-Bar Coalition, the California Judges Foundation, Executive Board (Vice-President, 2010-2011), and the California Judges Association, Executive Board (Sec./Treas. 2007-2008). She is a past President of the Consuelo M. Callahan Inn of Court. Judge Lofthus taught courses for judges at the B.E. Witkin Judicial College, the California Judges Association, and for law students at the Laurence A. Drivon Humphreys School of Law. She practiced for over 20 years in San Joaquin County, both in civil and criminal law. Prior to her appointment, she was a Certified Family Law Specialist, with an office in downtown Lodi.
From January 2018 through 2019, Judge Lofthus was the Presiding Judge for the San Joaquin County Courts - supervising the entire operations of the court and all of the court’s employees.
Judge Lofthus is a highly regarded judicial leader. She is well known for her state-wide contributions of time and talent to enhance the judicial branch, access to justice and public confidence which is essential to our democratic form of justice. In nominating Judge Lofthus, Judges Callahan and Kronlund said:
"Judge Lofthus was unanimously elected as the Presiding Judge of San Joaquin County in 2018. She routinely handled the complex management of the Court with a staff of over 300 with diplomacy, competency, and skill. She has proven herself to be a very capable manager, as well as a caring and compassionate leader.
Her commitment to the Judicial Branch is noteworthy, with Judge Lofthus having served on the Board of the California Judges Association, and as a member of numerous Judicial Council Committees and Work Groups to foster public confidence in the judicial system and increase access to justice for everyone.
Judge Lofthus consistently supports her community by volunteering above and beyond the normal workload and well beyond normal work hours. She has given up many lunch hours over the years to participate in the First Impressions civics education program for 5th graders throughout the county, teaching students about the three branches of government, separation of powers and the right to trial by jury. She has been a valuable member of the newly formed Just the Girls outreach program bringing fun and educational activities to girls at the Migrant Camps to mentor girls and promote a desire to pursue higher education."
Judge Lofthus spends her spare time with her family, and enjoys gardening and doing yoga.
Thank you to all of those who were able to come out to honor the 2021 Law Day recipient, Judge Lofthus!
