2021 Outstanding New Lawyer Joshua Hunsucker

Joshua Hunsucker Portrait

Joshua Hunsucker is many things to many people. To Neumiller & Beardslee—its attorneys and clients—Josh is a talented litigator who never backs away from a challenge.

To the members of the Consuelo M. Callahan American Inns of Court, Josh and his Neumiller colleague, Richie Aranda, are a dynamic duo known for their introductory video skits reminding Inns members to follow the rules and clean up after themselves played at each Inns meeting during the 2019-2020 season.

To his family, Josh is a devoted husband, father, and partner in endeavors like the Hidden Heroes program, a network of local governments established by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation that supports military caregivers and is championed by Josh’s wife, Kelly.

To his training comrades through the U.S. Army Ranger program, which the Army describes as “one of the toughest training courses for which a Soldier can volunteer,” Josh was an inspiration who conquered setbacks and surmounted the challenge of that elite program.

To the more than 100 soldiers he commanded in Baghdad during the 2007 surge, Army Captain Joshua Hunsucker was a resolute leader who guided them and kept them safe in the face of danger.

To the many veterans Josh has helped since, through Stockton’s chapter of Team Red, White & Blue; the Wounded Warrior Project; the San Joaquin County Veterans Advisory Committee; and the United Veterans Council of San Joaquin County, or with whom Josh has interacted as a mentor through the San Joaquin County Veterans Court program, Josh is a caring advocate and tireless supporter.

To the San Joaquin County Bar Association, Josh is a leader with the Civil Litigation Section and a member of the Court Assigned Counsel Committee. He joined its Board of Governors in 2020. He is deservedly the Outstanding New Lawyer.

That award honors an attorney of the SJCBA that has been admitted to the California Bar for fewer than seven years and who has demonstrated outstanding service to their community. Indeed, “service” has been one of the defining features of Josh’s career. His deployment to Iraq was the subject of the book The Good Soldiers by David Finkel and the subsequent book and movie Thank You for Your Service. Mr. Finkel would later come to speak at University of the Pacific in 2018 at Josh’s invitation as part of Stockton Veterans Week that Josh and Kelly organized.

After his deployment, Josh served as a law clerk in the Judge Advocate’s Office in the National Guard while earning his law degree at University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law and raising small children with Kelly. In 2014, Josh joined Neumiller & Beardslee, where he has developed litigation expertise in the fields of real estate law, construction, and homeowners’ associations.

His legal practice has not diminished his drive to serve. As Team Red, White & Blue’s athletic director, Josh works with local community business partners to build support for it, including low- or no-cost activities (e.g., Crossfit and yoga) to veterans. He has worked with Fleet Feet organizing runs to support veterans. In 2019, Josh and Kelly traveled to Indianapolis for a Hidden Heroes event where they met Senator Elizabeth Dole, Tom Hanks, Savannah Guthrie, and Andrew Luck, and appeared on The Today Show. Josh has served the Stockton legal community as a volunteer for the First Impressions program, which works with area fifth grade classes to create a positive introduction to the legal system.

For all of these reasons and more, Lisa Blanco Jimenez and I were proud to co-nominate our colleague for the Outstanding New Lawyer award, and we are pleased to see Josh recognized for contributions to the legal community, the larger local community, and for humbly making service a way of life.
