Today’s law practice requires understanding the connections between law, public policy, and legislation. This summer, the Drivon School of Law at Humphreys is offering a course entitled The Law & Public Policy, which is being taught by former State Assemblymember Greg Aghazarian and Dr. Lawrence Giventer.

Local attorneys are invited to attend as “visiting students,” paying one-half tuition ($825.00) as a “no credit” course. Classes begin July 11, meeting each Thursday evening for eleven weeks.

The course explores the relationship between the law and politics, with a focus on California state and local government. Lawyers are at the forefront of the most controversial and contentious societal issues, including civil rights and liberties, the environmental, homelessness, privacy, criminal justice, taxation, and health care. The class will visit the State Capital to spend a day with legislators and staff to experience the reality of how policy ideas become legislation that becomes law. Lawyers are needed at each step.

Greg Aghazarian leads the Governmental Advocacy practice for Beattie & Aghazarian. In the Assembly, he served as Minority Caucus Chair, Co-Chair of the Ethics Committee, and Vice Chair of the Public Safety and Health & Environmental Safety committees. He was named “Legislator of the Year” by the California Sheriff’s Association and the Civil Justice Association of California. After leaving the Assembly, he served on the Workers Compensation Appeals Board.

Lawrence Giventer is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Public Administration at CSU Stanislaus, where founded and directed its nationally accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in public administration and engineering degrees from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Giventer is a frequent political analyst for radio, television, print, and Internet media. He is currently a certified law student at the Drivon School of Law.
