On November 17, 2016 the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce presented its annual Athena awards at a luncheon held at the Stockton Golf and Country Club. This was the Chamber's thirtieth year handing out the awards, which recognize and honor outstanding business and professional women for their excellence.
This year's honorees were Carol J. Ornelas, the CEO of Visionary Home Builders of California, and Erin Guy Castillo, partner at Parish Guy Castillo, PLC. Ms. Guy Castillo received the Athena Young Professional Leadership Award (the "Young Athena"), given to a woman under age 40 that is recognized by members of the local community as an emerging leader who demonstrates excellence, creativity, and initiative in her business or profession.
Ms. Guy Castillo accepted the award in front of a large crowd that included her co-workers, friends, family, and colleagues of the many local organizations of which she has been a part. Ms. Guy Castillo gave a short speech that she began by saying, "the journey of life is not taken alone and the best part of the journey is the people you meet along the way." She went on to thank all of those people she met along the way whom she credited for making this latest accomplishment possible.
Ms. Guy Castillo stressed the importance of having a mentor and acknowledged Lynne Thaxter Brown, her first legal mentor, whom she "stalked" in order to get an interview for a summer job during law school. She also thanked Bill Parish, whom she met by responding to a Craigslist ad and with whom she eventually formed the law corporation that bears her name today. These stories illustrated her "can do, don't take no for an answer" attitude that has made Ms. Guy Castillo a successful and respected figure both inside and outside the legal community.
"The 'Young Athena' award is given to a woman under 40 that is recognized by members of the local community as an emerging leader who demonstrates excellence, creativity, and initiative in her business or profession."
Ms. Guy Castillo joins other members of the San Joaquin County legal community to receive either the Athena or the Young Athena awards, among them Jeanne Zolezzi (2004), Judge Consuelo M. Callahan (2009), and Monica Streeter (2013).
