Under Oath: Anthony Gutierrez


Anthony Gutierrez has been an SJCBA Member since 1980. Now retired from practice, he is a former member of the San Joaquin County Board of Education.

Q. Definition of perfect happiness?
A. On the Santa Cruz beach with family and friends.

Q. Greatest fear?
A. For me, any harm to my grandchildren. For the world, people failing to live together in peace.

Q. Trait you dislike in yourself?
A. I worry too much about things. My family calls me a worry wart!

Q. Trait you dislike in others?
A. Dishonesty.

Q. Greatest extravagance?
A . A vacation home in Santa Cruz.

Q. Favorite journey?
A. Patty and I joined the Peace Corps and lived in Bolivia. We travelled across Lake Titicaca to Peru—Machu Picchu and Cusco.

Q. Something about you that most people don’t know.
A. A cat once saved my life. We lived in a thatch-roofed hut in Bolivia with a cat I named Rolls-Royce (so I could say I had one). One night I almost got bit by a very poisonous bushmaster snake, but Rolls-Royce saved me. The snake barely grazed the cat, who was blinded for three weeks.

Q. Word or phrase you most overuse?
A. “GO BEARS!” I am a fanatic Berkeley fan.

Q. Greatest regret?
A. Not spending more time with my younger brother, Daniel. I lost him when he was only thirty.

Q. Greatest love?
A. My wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann Drake Gutierrez.

Q. Talent you’d most like to have?
A. Write poetry.

Q. What would you like to be reincarnated as?
A. An eagle—oh, to fly!

Q. Most treasured possession?
A. A gold railroad watch Patty’s father gave me when we got married. It belonged to his father.

Q. What is your favorite occupation?
A. Lawyering.

Q. What is your most marked characteristic?
A. Either being a fanatic Bear fan or being a grandpa who loves to be around his grandkids.

Q. What do you most value in your friends?
A. That they are always there when I need them. You know it’s a friend if they help you move or drive you to the airport!

Q. Favorite writers?
A. Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Milton.

Q. Favorite real life heroes?
A. Cesar Chavez; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Senator John McCain; German Prime Minister Angela Merkel; Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg basically strong people who love freedom.

Q. Favorite fictional heroes?
A. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Chanticleer.

Q. Greatest accomplishment?
A. Passing the California Bar.

Q. How would you like to die?
A. In bed surrounded by my family.

Q. What is your motto?
A. Truth is the best policy. And in the words of Winston Churchill, “Never give in. Never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in.”
